Classes are open to all students whether residing in the Big Bear Lake Valley or just visiting, The Arts Council of Big Bear Valley’s mission is to “enhance the culture of the arts in our community, and to enrich the lives of our residents and visitors alike through outreach, engagement and education opportunities throughout the year”.
Introduction to Photography
Learn about your camera, how it functions, what all those terms and symbols mean. Whether you are using a phone, a point and shoot or a DSLR camera, these classes will help you learn how to take better photographs. This low cost ($5.00) two week course with Instructor Barbara Jordan will help you learn how to use your camera and basics of composition, exposure and depth of field. Classes will be held at 10am – 11am on March 21st and March 28th at the Mary Johnson Center. There is a $5.00 fee for each class. Ages 12 and up are invited to attend. The class is limited to 8. Acting Games and Improv for Kidz!
This low cost class, ($5.00 per student), taught by instructor Jennifer Gail, is an introduction for kidz age 6 and up, to all the many things they can do on stage. Kidz will learn and grow through fun acting games gaining self-confidence and making new friends. Classes are held on Thursdays, 4:30-5:30 PM. See class dates and sign up at SignUpGenius.
Saturday Art-Intro, no cost classes
A free, introductory program for children grades 1-12. Saturday afternoon classes — the only requirement is that you have to pre-register your children before coming (no drop-in’s). This program provides children a chance to explore MANY different art forms — from ceramics, to stained glass, to painting and printmaking, to weaving, and to basic drawing. Spring & Summer Art Studios – fee and low cost classes
April to June are Spring Art Studio classes on Friday afternoons. Real art, in 90 minute, focused classes to improve student skills and techniques in drawing, painting and mixed media concept, design and execution. Friday Spring Art Studio classes are geared for students in grades 6-9. Class size is limited to 10 students. The fee is $10.00 per student, per class. Online class schedule.
Starting in June, we offer three-day, Art Studio Intensive classes to tickle the fancy, engage the imagination, and learn real art in our Village classroom, taught by talented professional artist-teachers.
Each class concentrates on a specific media or subject — Offers a wide and varied schedule of, fun and focused classes! Class size is limited to ensure individual attention and learning. Summer Art Studios are geared for children ages 5 to 18. Online class schedule.
Mobile Arts Program – our art classes in the classroom
The Mobile Arts Program has connects artists with public schools, and community centers throughout the Valley. These artists teach a wide variety of visual arts skills designed to complement classroom curriculum, including drawing and painting, clay, sculpture, book arts, weaving, design and architecture.
While most public schools have cut back in art education, these teachers carry the message of creative thinking to children in our schools each year. Email registration. Online class descriptions and schedule.
Teens and Adults – no cost, low cost and tuition based programs
Beginning Guitar – 12 years and older
A low cost class for students 12 years and older (adults OK). The class is taught by David Castagner and will teach the basics of playing guitar. Classes are held on Thursdays, 3:30 – 4:30 PM. Youth Art Studios – fee and low cost classes –
During the summer and fall terms, we offer a small selection of tuition-based classes designed for youth and teens. Offered on Saturday afternoon, the class selection varies term to term. Email registration. Online class schedules.
Teen Studio Intensive – no cost classes
A free visual arts program for talented teens during the school year, focused on developing painting, drawing and multi-media skills.
This group meets after school to work, converse, and experiment with art-making techniques and concepts. Email Registration. Online class schedule.
The Mary Johnson Center
Art classes (unless designated elsewhere) are held in the Mary Johnson Center at the Community Church, 40946 Big Bear Blvd., Big Bear Lake, CA 92315. There is easy access and plenty of free parking at the center.
